That belief is at the heart of our Student Mentoring Program, an initiative designed to give First Nations medical students and junior doctors hands-on clinical experience, professional guidance, and exposure to specialist outreach healthcare with an Ophthalmology specialist team in some of Australia's most unique settings.
The program provides more than clinical learning. It creates opportunities for connection, cultural understanding, mentorship, and inspiration that can shape future careers.
Building Future Healthcare Leaders
The overarching aim of the Student Mentoring Program is to create structured, supported opportunities for First Nations medical students and junior doctors to explore ophthalmology and rural healthcare through direct participation in outreach services. Participants gain clinical exposure, career guidance, mentoring, and an understanding of how specialist healthcare can be delivered in remote communities.
The program also seeks to contribute to a growing pipeline of First Nations clinicians with an interest in eye health and specialist medicine, helping strengthen the future healthcare workforce across Australia.
Learning in the Real World
In June 2026, with support from The Fred Hollows Foundation, Torres Strait Islander medical student Aiden Wu joined Vanguard Health's Ophthalmology Surgical Intensive in Weipa, Queensland. Aiden, a second-year medical student from the University of Queensland, participated in a week-long immersive placement designed to expose students to the full patient journey, from assessment through to surgery and post-operative care.
Working alongside a multidisciplinary team including an Ophthalmologist, Anaesthetist, Theatre Nurses, Optometrist, Indigenous Eye Health Coordinator, and Program Manager, Aiden gained a unique insight into how specialist outreach services are delivered in rural and remote communities.
Throughout the week, Aiden observed in:
- Pre-operative assessments and clinical consultations
- Cataract surgery and anaesthetic procedures
- Post-operative patient reviews and education
- YAG laser procedures
- Patient experience surveys and discussions around care outcomes
The intensive included 33 patient consultations, 24 cataract surgeries, and 9 YAG laser procedures, providing a rich and diverse learning experience in just four days.
The Value of Mentorship
One of the most powerful aspects of the program is the opportunity for students to learn directly from experienced clinicians.
By working closely with Ophthalmologists, Nurses, Optometrists, and support staff, students gain a greater understanding of the many roles required to deliver successful outreach programs. They see first hand how multidisciplinary teams collaborate, adapt, and integrate into existing hospital services to provide high quality care in regional and remote settings.
For Aiden, patient interaction was one of the most valuable parts of the experience.
"Patient interaction was the most valuable aspect of the intensive. In both clinic and surgery I had ample time to connect and yarn with patients. In this time I was able to learn more about who they are and their feelings around surgery."
The opportunity to build relationships with patients and communities helped reinforce the importance of delivering healthcare close to home, reducing the need for patients to travel long distances for treatment.
Supporting Culturally Safe Healthcare
The Student Mentoring Program also provides valuable exposure to culturally safe healthcare delivery.
Students are immersed in environments where listening, empathy, and community connection are central to patient care. Through direct engagement with patients, families, and local healthcare teams, participants gain a deeper understanding of the importance of culturally responsive healthcare.
Reflecting on the experience, Aiden shared:
"Culturally safe care is about listening, connecting and providing empathy. For many patients, clinics and surgery can be a stressful time, so it is important to recognise their stress and act accordingly."
These lessons extend far beyond Ophthalmology and provide important foundations for future clinicians, regardless of where their careers may lead.
Inspiring Future Career Pathways
For many students, exposure to a specialty in a real-world setting can shape future career aspirations.
Aiden's experience strengthened his interest in Ophthalmology and provided valuable insight into how specialist healthcare is delivered in rural communities.
"This experience has positively influenced my aspiration to pursue Ophthalmology. Due to the wealth of support from the team, I was able to deepen my knowledge within Ophthalmology and how it is delivered in a rural context."
Programs like this not only provide education and mentoring, they also help inspire future healthcare leaders who may one day work in regional, rural, and remote Australia.
Looking to the Future
The success of the Weipa mentoring placement is only the beginning.
Vanguard Health has already identified future opportunities for students and trainees to participate in Ophthalmology surgical intensives at Katherine Hospital, Gove District Hospital, and future Weipa programs.
