Peter Mitchell is an integral part of the Vanguard Heath team. As our IRIS program manager, Peter has had a heavy involvement with providing sight saving surgeries to First Nations peoples across Australia. Recently, Peter has been awarded the 2024 NT Nursing and Midwifery Excellence in Aboriginal Health Award, a prestigious award that recognises his continuous commitment to improving Indigenous Health.
Peter also continues to be an advocate for the LGBTQIA+ community in both his personal and work life. The NT LGBTQIA+ committee is in the midst of preparing for their annual Pride Bake Sale at the NT Hospital on the 20th of June. Last year, Peter prepared over 150 cakes for this sale, and this year, he is baking over 200 cakes! All of the profits of the bake sale go to Pride-based charities. The bake sale is followed by the NT Pride Parade on the 22nd of June.
Peter has also previously been involved in founding the first ever LGBTQIA+ student society at a Catholic University. In his spare time, he also writes scholarship applications for Nepalese LGBTQIA+ activists to attend human rights conferences in the Netherlands, Canada, America and Australia.
It is very important to us as a team to highlight these amazing contributions that Peter has made to the LGBTQIA+ community, and to place a spotlight on such contributions not only in the month of June, but all year around.
Thank you Peter!
